NSS CAMP

NSS - YOUTH DAY CELEBRATIONS - EYE CHECK-UP CAMP - JAN 2018

On the occasion of Youth Day, the NSS Dept. organized an Eye Check-Up Camp at its adopted village- Parodi. This camp was organized in association with the ‘Sight for Sightless’ programme by the K.K. Eye Institute, Pune. NSS PO Veena Kenchi and Meenal Sumant organized the Camp with volunteers- Bhagyashree Parchure, Vaishnavi and Megha Rajguru.

72 people benefitted from the Camp. 8 senior citizens were diagnosed withcataracts and directed to surgery. The K.K. Eye Institute will provide free surgery under their special programmes.

NSS CAMP 2017

The Annual NSS Camp was held at village Parodi in Shirur Taluka from 1st December 2017 to 7th December 2017. Prof. Veena Kenchi and Dr. Meenal Sumant coordinated the NSS Camp with the participation of 58 students. The volunteers did an excellent job by participating enthusiastically in the camp activities.

Swachata Abhiyan

the volunteers undertook weed cleaning and cleanliness drives at the funeral grounds at Parodi and Shivtakrar Mhalungi, Perr Saheb Dargah and the ZP School at Parodi.

Tree plantation

More than 80 trees were contributed by the NSS Department for the tree plantation drive conducted at Parodi and Shivtakrar Mhalungi.

Book Donation drive

During the initial visits, Prof. Veena and Dr. Meenal realized the lack of a library for the students in Parodi. To overcome this limitation, the staff and students of St. Mira’s College donated more than 200 books to the ZP schools at Parodi, Satkarwadi, and Shivtakrar Mhalungi.

The Street plays by the students on the topic- Beti Bachao and Swachata, were well received and appreciated by the villagers.

Village survey

The volunteers participated in the daily activities of the villagers and also conducted a survey of the population.

Lectures and Visits by Shirur BDO

The last day a visit to Vyankatesh Sugar factory was organized for the volunteers. One of the finest factories which create minimum waste was studied by the volunteers. Technological impact on factories and its impact on the environment was discussed by Mr. Sonawane.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr. Mangaldas Bandal (Ex-Speaker, ZP) and the Chief Guests for the valedictory function were- The Speaker of Panchayat Samiti. Mr. Subhashji Umap, and Mr. Ganpatrao Kalkute.


NSS Activity

Kar Seva - At Sadhu Vaswani Mission

The Department of NSS was privileged to volunteer for the Kar Seva activity at the Sadhu Vaswani Mission on 14th September 2018.

This Kar Seva activity was for Rev. Dada J. P. Vaswani’s sacred Samadhi.

48 NSS Volunteers with their Programme Officers, Prof. Veena Kenchi and Prof. Meenal Sumant, participated in this activity. The students formed a human chain and helped remove stones and mud for levelling the area for the construction of the sacred Samadhi.

Blood Donation Camp

The NSS Department organised a Blood Donation Camp in association with the Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital, in the college campus, to encourage and motivate students to donate blood. The students responded enthusiastically, and we had 114 walk-ins. The hospital team was well organised wherein every walk-in was checked for their weight, haemoglobin and blood pressure.

A total of 48 bottles of blood was collected in this blood donation camp.

NSS Department Inaugural Programme 2018-19

The NSS Department inaugural function for 2018-19 was held on 6th August 2018.Mr. Anwar Rajan (Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Pune), inaugurated the yearly activities of the department. Mr. Rajan is a well-known social activist who has worked in the field of religious unity and has participated in promoting the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

He oriented the SS volunteers on the topic, 'Youth and Social Service'. He spoke about 'cleaning of the minds before cleaning of the society' and gave an alternative perspective on social service. He also discussed the chronic problems in Indian society like superstitions, casteism, religious hatred, forms of inequalities, untouchability, and gender discrimination. He urged the volunteers to try and change the mindset of society, but first initiating a change in our attitudes, perceptions and outlook towards various facets of society. Mr. Rajan emphasized modern values like democracy, secularism, equality and fraternity. He also explained the relevance of Gandhian thoughts with respect to these modern values.

The programme was inaugurated by the lighting of a lamp by our chief guest – Mr. Anwar Rajan, along with our Principal,Dr. Gulshan Gidwani, our vice-principal Dr. Shalini Iyer, our Coordinator for BBA and BCS Departments,Ms. Stella Ambrose and NSS programme officers. It was followed by the University song and the NSS song. The annual report (2017-18) and the plan for 2018-19 was presented by Prof. Veena Kenchi. Prof. Meenal Sumant presented the vote of thanks.

NSS Social Service Activity in Memory of Dada J.P.Vaswani

The NSS volunteers undertook a social service activity on 21st July 2018 in the sacred memory of our beloved Dada J. P. Vaswani.

They visited the National Association for the Welfare of the Physically Challenged, Pune. It is an organization run by Mr. Rahul Deshmukh wherein handicap students are given assistance for education, skill development and recreation. The department donated nine bedsheets for the hostel run by the institute.

The volunteers were made aware of the facilities in the hostel area, the technical rooms as well as recreational room for the kids. The institute telecasted two short documentaries on the work of Mr. Rahul Deshmukh for the volunteers. Our volunteers will participate in activities undertaken by the association, like reading to the students, compiling of notes for them and celebrating festivals with the students.


Tree Plantation

Tree Plantation - 4th July 2018

The NSS Department, St. Mira’s College for Girls organized a Tree Plantation Drive on 4th July 2018.The drive was conducted in association with the Botanical Survey of India, Koregaon Park, Pune at their Mundwa Campus. 30 trees were planted by the students which included - Bottle Palm, Mahogany, Phoenix and Jamun Trees.

The programme was organized by Prof. Veena Kenchi (NSS PO) and Dr. Meenal Sumant (NSS PO). Dr. Jadhav, Dr. Jalal of the Botanical Survey of India guided the student volunteers in planting the trees.Dr. Jadhav also advised the students on the importance of medicinal plants and the varieties available at their institute. 27 NSS volunteers of St. Mira’s College for girls participated in the tree plantation activity. There will be regular monitoring and recording of the growth of the trees planted.
