Students’ Seminar: “Morally Instructive or Socially Destructive? Discourses on Children’s Literature” by the Department of English

The Department of English at St. Mira’s College organised a one-day student’s seminar titled ‘Morally Instructive or Socially Destructive? Discourses on Children’s Literature’ on 5 th April 2023 in the college A.V. Room. Renowned children’s author, Ms. Leela Gour-Broome, was invited as the keynote speaker and she gave the students a glimpse into the publishing world of Indian children’s literature in English. The talk was both eye-opening and inspiring. This keynote address was followed by nine research paper presentations by students from the TYBA English Specialisation batch of 2022-2023. The research undertaken by students covered broad areas ranging from feminist analyses, intersectional approaches, pedagogical concerns and Marxist and postcolonial studies to translation and adaptation-based studies in the domain of children’s literature and media. The presentations were followed by a highly interactive question-answer session which enabled students to defend and justify their research while also creating scope to explore newer areas of research. The experience not only honed the research skills of students but also gave them a means of engaging practically in the domain of academic writing, public speaking and defending one’s research. The research papers presented by students were the outcome of a yearlong course in Literary Criticism and Theory which is a part of their curriculum. A Skill Enhancement Course in Editing and a month-long research mentoring programme under faculty as research guides were also crucial in bringing their research to fruition. Selected papers from the seminar will be sent for publication in prestigious journals.
