Theatre Club
The Department of English Theatre Club Performance- “Say Something” (2021-22)
The Mira Manch-Queens, in collaboration with The Queer Circle, organised an event on Friday 29th April 2022, marking the end of the academic year 2021-2022, and also celebrating Shakespeare Day with poetry, theatre, and everything queer under the Pride Flag.
The programme started at 12:00 p.m. with approximately 70 people present in the audience; they had purchased tickets earlier, but the performers set up a ticket counter right in front of the auditorium, should more people be interested. The event began with a spoken-word segment with performances from Prerna Anand (TYBBA), Shreya Bhide (TYBA), Friyana Munshi (SYMA), Geetanjali Lachke (FYMA) and Harleen Kaur Grewal (TYBA). The theme of this segment was “Conversations with the Moon” and the performers beautifully delivered their poetry.
Around 12:30 p.m., they were presented with the most awaited segment of the event – a queer-themed play, where the characters of William Shakespeare and Roman goddess Diana posed as the voices of reason for the protagonist named Alessandra, who was in love with her non-binary friend Valentine; additional characters, i.e., Katherine and Mario, also played a crucial role through Alessandra’s dilemma and her pros and cons of falling for Valentine. The play highlighted the seemingly complicated difference between platonic and romantic relationships, be it straight or queer. The cast and crew had wisely incorporated Shakespeare’s well-written sonnets in the script, including Sonnet 18 at the very beginning; through the recitation of the sonnets by the chorus, the audience could sense the rising tension of the play.
The event ended at around 1:30 p.m., with a teary-eyed cast, who was overwhelmed that this was the last event of the year, and that the current TY students would be handing the theatre club over to them as this was the latter’s final production.
Podcast by the Mira Manch Queens: “Dissecting the Media”
“Dissecting the Media” is a weekly podcast on Spotify, started by the heads (Kareena Narayan, Shreya Bhide, and Harleen Kaur Grewal) of the Mira Manch-Queens, the theatre club of St. Mira’s College for Girls.
Every Sunday, one of the heads chooses a piece of media – films, TV shows, songs, books, plays, etc. – they wish to talk about, and discuss the segments which highlight certain issues, or where it has gone wrong with respect to current times.
The episodes are about an hour long, with a few spoilers of the content to be discussed, and trigger warnings are given beforehand as well, should the discussion turn serious or uncomfortable for some listeners. However, the main idea of the podcast is to discuss one’s favourite film or show, and why it is still appreciated by many, despite all the flaws discussed.

Industrial Visits/Field Trips
The Department of English -Field Trip to The Box
Space is central to any performance. But space in theatre is where the two most important components of any theatrical production—the audience and the actors—come together. On the 28th of April, Thursday, 2022, the Second-year, English Special St. Mira’s Ensemble Group and the SEC Theatre course instructor, Hartman De Souza, ventured out to scout the acting space rented out by The Box— Pune’s very first ‘black box’ performing arts theatre at Karve Road, Pune. The theatre was perfect for an experimental theatre group as it made for an incredible immersive theatre setting that knew no bounds, where, as Hartman says, “even the sky is not the limit”. Students metAveneesh, the Junior Manager of Lighting and Set Design about the technicalities of theatre/The Box and they were introducedto the various facilities provided by The Boxsuch as: hi-tech lighting system which boasts Power cans, Spotlights, Face Lights, standing, portable Spotlights and house lights—all of which are attached to bars, making the lighting flexible and adjustable, curtains, jet-black in colour, can be drawn to block out all light and shroud the space in complete darkness— literally like a pitch-black, boundless void or vacuum etc.
The Box was realized by 2 Pune-based theatre practitioners Pradeep Vaidya, who Hartman introduced the students to and whom they had the pleasure of interacting with, and Rupali Bhave. The students were dumbfounded by the infinite possibilities of using entries, exits and the mezzanine spaces in The Box—a one-of-a-kind, portal to a magical universe of drama, dreams and discovery. 17 students participated in the field trip.
